The best kind of trips are those that are unplanned and those that happen after the end of a big event. For the past two weeks, I have been cooped up at work and busy finalizing exam and final grades that I sort of lost touch with my whole Manila Traveler self. Thankfully, I was finally had the opportunity to go out and stretch my legs a little bit, one of my officemates, Jazmin, was kind enough to give us tickets to the rerun of the hit Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” starring Mig Ayesa.
Since we ended our work super late last night (meetings up to 6 and then pseudo-planning up to 7) we somewhat missed the first few scenes of the play. Nonetheless I was really excited when I heard familiar tunes being belted out by the cast. Since I had spent countless, if not, endless of hours playing GTA: Vice City and Guitar Hero, the rock songs of the 80’s aren’t lost on me, the songs from Pat Benatar, Aerosmith, Journey, Guns N’ Roses were perfectly belted out by the cast.
Watching the play, it was exciting to see Mig Ayesa rock it out on stage, especially since my memories of him were from the defunct show Rockstar: INXS. Ayesa’s vocal performance and acting was great, over the top and very hilarious. But the true star of the show was the actor playing Donnie, his vocals and acting was truly powerful. Kayla Rivera, as Sherry, wasn’t so bad as well, she played the part perfectly and with a lot of glamor and the whole down-on-your-luck ticket right pat down. Apart from the three main characters: Staci, Donnie, and Sherry, the character Franz wasn’t so bad at all. Franz in this play was comical, every scene with him was akin to watching slapstick comedy in a comedy bar.
Since I never got the chance to watch the movie adaptation of the play, I was glad that I was able to watch our locally-produced version. The experience was an exciting one, especially since it was unexpected, I had a great time and had a lot of laughs. Though we were late by 30 minutes and had missed some of the songs (I was looking forward to “We Built this City”), the story is easy enough to pick up and just singing along to songs heard on the radio or in games was really exciting and great.
Rock of Ages starts its run on October 31, 2014 to November 9, 2014.
