This may sound or come off as sappy but for a long time I was single. There were some tries here and there but nothing ever came out of it. So for a long time Valentines was just another day for me. There was this one time my sister and I spent the whole day watching romantic movies, another time...probably that's it. It wasn't until a year ago when Tricia came into my life that Valentines became an extra special day. I can still remember looking for that perfect gift for her and planning that special trip in Intramuros with her. It was all great and on our second outing we took a food trip around Makati. Like any other weekend we usually start our day a little bit. There's the usual challenge of Tricia trying to get me to jog which usually ends up with both of us sleeping in. Our day started already with a brunch/lunch in our favorite place in Makati, Little Tokyo. As usual the choices were numerous with the standards of Izakaya and Nihonbashitei looming large or the other nameless places inside Little Tokyo itself. Originally it was Izakaya but they open late. We decided to drop by the Japanese grocer just around the corner. I stocked up on the usual: gigantic-sized Cup Noodles of seafood, Japanese curry, and beef; and my all time favorite, Calpis Milk. The Japanese grocer also stocks everything one needs to make Japanese delicacies, a plus is it also has a restaurant/diner inside. So if you ever get hungry there's that to stave of any pangs of hunger. After all of the shopping Izakaya wasn't yet open and we decided to just eat next door at Shinjuku Japanese Cuisine. We were greeted with the usual Japanese welcome and seated. Apart from another couple, we were the only ones there, their service was pretty quick. Tricia had the chicken curry while I had the katsudon, plus we added crispy california maki as an appetizer. Shinjuku's katsudon is served in a cute bento-like box keeping the heat trapped inside and super heating the rice to unbearable tongue burning levels. Despite it being piping hot I really enjoyed the katsudon the ratio of egg to pork was just right. My only qualm was the amount of rice, it was more than enough to feed a sumo wrestler on a diet. Besides the katsudon Shinjuku's curry and crispy California maki roll was delicious. The roll was like eating spicy toro maki without the spice. A little dip of their soy sauce and a dollop of wasabi perfected and satisfied my craving for sushi. On the other hand their curry was alright, it had all the trappings typical of Japanese curry but I felt it needed a little more protein. I was looking for the chicken however all I tasted were potatoes and vegetables. For quite some time Tricia's been craving and wanting to try out the new churros place in Rockwell. The one with the name I can't even pronounce until yesterday and the one people have been lining up to. Yes it is Churreria La Lola with the happy grandma smiling at everyone to try out home loved deep fried churros. Served in a circus themed cone, Churreria's churros are a mouthful of pastry goodness. Deep fried and sprinkled with a generous amount of sugar, it is good enough to eat all by itself. The first bite is addictive, light and airy without the disgusting ooze and heaviness of the oil akin to most churros. Dipping the churros in chocolate turns the whole experience into a beautiful love affair of crunchy, airy, fried delight. But be warned though finish this snack or you'll have to face the oil seeping out of the cone sooner or later. Shinjuku Japanese Cuisine is located at 2277 Chino Roces Avenue, Pasong Tamo.
